Mr. & Mrs. Campbell: How We Met

by Kortney Campbell on April 9, 2012

So this is my husband John & over the next week, I’m going to tell you our story – from how we met all the way to our honeymoon. We’ll start here with how we met & how much I love him. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m not sure what you believe in, but I truly believe he’s my soul mate. God made him for me.

This is where I’ll also give you a little warning: he typically edits all of my blogs. However, since this week’s about him, he isn’t allowed to see what I write until it’s already made public. That being said, I apologize for any grammatical errors you may encounter!

Here it goes…

I met John briefly at one of his shows in Jacksonville in May of 2009 when my cousins, Aubre, Autumn & Megan came down to Florida from Tennessee to celebrate Aubre’s 21st birthday. However, we didn’t really get to hang out until later that year. I had recently gone through what I would have thought to be one of the saddest, most unreal times of my life in August, when my dad committed suicide just 16 days before my birthday (I’m not looking for sympathy here, it’s part of the story, so just hold out a second). Rather than his death having a negative effect on me, I realized I was missing out on life.

I was unhappy in my 9-5 job & my nice little apartment, so I quit & left Tampa. I went on tour with peta2 & traveled to states I had never been to. I fell in love with cities, dressed up like a chicken, rode in an anti-circus van, met new friends & felt more dependent on myself than I ever had. It was where I was supposed to be & without this change of career I would have never met John.

While I was on tour, Aubre (she really likes raisins) called to ask if, during my week-long break in October, I wanted to take a road trip to South Florida to hang out with the guys she had previously introduced me to. They had another show & she was going to come spend the week with me – it was a win/win.

Despite the fact that I’m just realizing it was 2009 & that photo says in was 2010, that weekend was amazing. John & the guys (New City Lions at the time, now Kids) played an amazing show dressed as the Newsies & Aubre & I went as snuggie Jedi. We spent the night, then headed back up to St. Pete for a halloween party (John was a luchador, Aubre was Penny Lane & I went as Malcom McDowell in A Clockwork Orange). I’m pretty sure Aubre & I hung out at John’s house that night (& many others) until the sun nearly came up & I had to pull over on the highway to let her drive because I was dozing off. It was so worth it!

Over the next couple of nights, we went to see Star Wars Live – which was one of the most amazing orchestra performances ever, then drove up to Orlando to go to a show with my awesome friend Katie. John, Aubre & I all slept in our snuggies on her livingroom floor & talked until we fell asleep.

Side note: have you ever met someone that knew all the words to a song you thought only you listened to? That was John. I’m not a new rap lover, but I’m pretty sure we officially connected over a DMX on our trip.

Anyways, I headed back to tour with a HUGE crush, but he had NO idea. I was in Arizona & California for the rest of the trip, so the time difference worked in our advantage (he’s a night owl) – we iChatted every night…I don’t think we missed a single one (even after I dropped my computer & broke the screen). Neither one of us had any idea that we’d ever end up together, so we told each other everything – the good, bad & the ugly. In just a week, he knew more about me than any friend I’ve ever had, and he gave me butterflies. I hoped he felt the same way, but still wasn’t sure until one night we stumbled upon it by accident (thanks to his friend Matt for making a “when you guys start dating” comment during our ichat. I owe him.)

When I came home from tour, John surprised me at the airport & we spent every day together until I had to leave again to visit family for Christmas. Before I left, he gave me a ninja turtle snuggie, one of the best Batman graphic novels I’ve ever read & a pack of teeny tiny baby socks (I have a borderline creepy obsession with miniature things).

While I was away, we decided we’d go to New York City for New Years on a whim & when he picked me up at the airport for the second time, I found a note in a beautiful plant he gave me (I hate the idea of cut flowers) asking me to be his girlfriend. After I said yes, we packed our bags, drove to Tennessee to pick up Aubre & headed north (I’m just now realizing how much driving I did that year)! We met up with some of our favorite people, had an amazing New Years & fell in love – literally. In New York in January of 2011, John & I said “I love you” for the very 1st time.

That February, he was leaving to go on tour with his brother’s band for a few months, so he gave me the sweetest Valentine’s Day gift to keep me from being too sad. He’ll have trouble continuing to top this:

I pretty much have the sweetest husband ever & don’t know what I’d do without him. In a way, I thank my dad for showing me that you can’t miss out on life, but I give credit to Aubre (& God, of course) for bringing me & John together.

Don’t worry- we paid her back by introducing her to her long-time boyfriend Dane. They’re in loooooove! Aren’t they the cutest?!

Well, this has become a novel, so I’ll stop here. Tomorrow, I’ll share our engagement story! How did you & your love meet? I’d love to hear about it!

Too cute. my husband and I met. I had just went through an abusive relationship, and was still in recovery. Pretty much sure that I could never love someone again, not even myself. I met this “old” guy at whilst singing Karaoke. He wasn’t my type, to say the least. But he was extremely nice, bought me a new phone, wired me money when I lost my wallet in a Louisiana casino (long story), sending me heaping piles of roses, one of which was a 4 1/2 foot long rose (because his love for me was THIS big..according to the card), boosting my lagging self-confidence, and most importantly…he made me laugh…something I hadn’t done in a very long time. Months passed with us as friends, he wanted more…I did not, until one night an old friend of mine, called Alcohol (fate disguised?) interceded. Voila! Love was in the air. We spent a lovely evening together, the blinders fell from my eyes, his closet filled with my clothes…and I never left. Shows him to ply me with alcohol! :-p He no longer has any closet space. Revenge is sweet…but my husband is sweeter. Interestingly enough, the same year you received your wonderful Valentine’s video, I received a similar video. This was entitled “The Seven Days of Valentines” and each day I received a new piece of the video, along with a present that coordinated with the day. Do they send these guys to some type of “how to be sweet” camp or something? If they do, I think our hubby’s must’ve been at the top of their class! Great blog today, looking forward to the rest of the story!

I met my husband when I was barely 18yrs. old, it was 1994. We met at a club, of all places:) I was just hanging out with a good friend partying & being our goofy selves. She seen this really cute guy, who was kissing another girl, she said omg that guy is so cute, go tell him I want to be with him! Me in my intoxicated self, went up to him, whispered in his ear, while he was kissing another girl, said to him, would u come b with me and my friend. He told the girl he was kissing, I’ll be right back. So he came with me to my friend, who was already onto her next victim, & he & I just started talking. He tried to kiss me, but my friend grabbed me & we took off being our goofy little selves, dancing & just being young. So the following week, we went back to the club, sober, & my friend said, “omg, there’s that guy from last week, I had totally forgotten all about it, but them she refreshed my memory & I went up to him & asked if he remembered me? Of course he hadn’t stopped thinking of me. So we started talking & became friends, but neither of us wanted to be in a relationship. I had a 1yr. old & he was single & having fun. I played hard to get & he didn’t get a kiss for over a month. We contiued to converse back and forth, but 6mo. rolled by & we couldn’t fight it anymore, we became each others only. Here we are 18yrs. later!!! We met Feb. 94, became boyfriend & girlfriend, Sept. 16, 1994 & were married on that day 6yrs. later!!! He’s an angel. He’s always treated me like a queen!!! He’s raised my daughter like she was his. He’s an incredible person! I love that you mentioned God, because, without HIM, I would have never met this wonderful person, or had this amazing life I have!!! Thanks for sharing your story! I hope you enjoyed mine. Also, thanks for your site, I love it!!! I’m not completely vegetarian yet. I’ve been off & on for well over a decade. I’m trying though. xoxoxo I wish you & your love a lifetime of love & happiness!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU SWEETY!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

    I agree with Jerry,

Just reading this story is encouraging, especially for the season of life I am trudging through right now. I am genuinely stoked and happy about the gnarly people who reside in St Pete, I am thankful for stories like this and for the both of you.
