So this is my husband John & over the next week, I’m going to tell you our story – from how we met all the way to our honeymoon. We’ll start here with how we met & how much I love him. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m not sure what you believe in, but I truly believe he’s my soul mate. God made him for me.
This is where I’ll also give you a little warning: he typically edits all of my blogs. However, since this week’s about him, he isn’t allowed to see what I write until it’s already made public. That being said, I apologize for any grammatical errors you may encounter!
Here it goes…
I met John briefly at one of his shows in Jacksonville in May of 2009 when my cousins, Aubre, Autumn & Megan came down to Florida from Tennessee to celebrate Aubre’s 21st birthday. However, we didn’t really get to hang out until later that year. I had recently gone through what I would have thought to be one of the saddest, most unreal times of my life in August, when my dad committed suicide just 16 days before my birthday (I’m not looking for sympathy here, it’s part of the story, so just hold out a second). Rather than his death having a negative effect on me, I realized I was missing out on life.
I was unhappy in my 9-5 job & my nice little apartment, so I quit & left Tampa. I went on tour with peta2 & traveled to states I had never been to. I fell in love with cities, dressed up like a chicken, rode in an anti-circus van, met new friends & felt more dependent on myself than I ever had. It was where I was supposed to be & without this change of career I would have never met John.
While I was on tour, Aubre (she really likes raisins) called to ask if, during my week-long break in October, I wanted to take a road trip to South Florida to hang out with the guys she had previously introduced me to. They had another show & she was going to come spend the week with me – it was a win/win.
Despite the fact that I’m just realizing it was 2009 & that photo says in was 2010, that weekend was amazing. John & the guys (New City Lions at the time, now Kids) played an amazing show dressed as the Newsies & Aubre & I went as snuggie Jedi. We spent the night, then headed back up to St. Pete for a halloween party (John was a luchador, Aubre was Penny Lane & I went as Malcom McDowell in A Clockwork Orange). I’m pretty sure Aubre & I hung out at John’s house that night (& many others) until the sun nearly came up & I had to pull over on the highway to let her drive because I was dozing off. It was so worth it!
Over the next couple of nights, we went to see Star Wars Live – which was one of the most amazing orchestra performances ever, then drove up to Orlando to go to a show with my awesome friend Katie. John, Aubre & I all slept in our snuggies on her livingroom floor & talked until we fell asleep.
Side note: have you ever met someone that knew all the words to a song you thought only you listened to? That was John. I’m not a new rap lover, but I’m pretty sure we officially connected over a DMX on our trip.
Anyways, I headed back to tour with a HUGE crush, but he had NO idea. I was in Arizona & California for the rest of the trip, so the time difference worked in our advantage (he’s a night owl) – we iChatted every night…I don’t think we missed a single one (even after I dropped my computer & broke the screen). Neither one of us had any idea that we’d ever end up together, so we told each other everything – the good, bad & the ugly. In just a week, he knew more about me than any friend I’ve ever had, and he gave me butterflies. I hoped he felt the same way, but still wasn’t sure until one night we stumbled upon it by accident (thanks to his friend Matt for making a “when you guys start dating” comment during our ichat. I owe him.)
When I came home from tour, John surprised me at the airport & we spent every day together until I had to leave again to visit family for Christmas. Before I left, he gave me a ninja turtle snuggie, one of the best Batman graphic novels I’ve ever read & a pack of teeny tiny baby socks (I have a borderline creepy obsession with miniature things).
While I was away, we decided we’d go to New York City for New Years on a whim & when he picked me up at the airport for the second time, I found a note in a beautiful plant he gave me (I hate the idea of cut flowers) asking me to be his girlfriend. After I said yes, we packed our bags, drove to Tennessee to pick up Aubre & headed north (I’m just now realizing how much driving I did that year)! We met up with some of our favorite people, had an amazing New Years & fell in love – literally. In New York in January of 2011, John & I said “I love you” for the very 1st time.
That February, he was leaving to go on tour with his brother’s band for a few months, so he gave me the sweetest Valentine’s Day gift to keep me from being too sad. He’ll have trouble continuing to top this:
I pretty much have the sweetest husband ever & don’t know what I’d do without him. In a way, I thank my dad for showing me that you can’t miss out on life, but I give credit to Aubre (& God, of course) for bringing me & John together.
Well, this has become a novel, so I’ll stop here. Tomorrow, I’ll share our engagement story! How did you & your love meet? I’d love to hear about it!
