So yesterday, I shared how John & I met. Which means today I’ll share his proposal. Finding out the person you want to be with forever is ready to start forever today, is one of the best days of your life. I’m so excited to share the details with you.
For my 24th birthday in August of 2010, John & I planned a trip to Orlando. Not just ANY trip, but a Disney trip. I’m not sure if you quite understand, but I am infatuated with Disney. Take a 5 year old’s excitement, multiplied by 10 & add an awesome hotel room & you have my kind of Disney adventure. Needless to say, we went all out. I called ahead to make in-park dinner reservations & even filled out their special dietary needs form to ensure we had a legit vegan dinner – dessert & all!
The 1st night, we headed to John’s favorite place – Medieval Times (I hate the fact that horses are used, but they have amazing vegan food & this place literally makes John’s life complete). Day 2 consisted of a trip to Island’s of Adventure with two of our friends from out of town. John & I had talked about marriage since the 2nd month we were dating & even though it had only been about 8 months, I thought MAYBE I would get a Disney proposal while we were there, so I joked about it all weekend, pretending to propose to John myself.
Our day at Disney came quickly & I tried not to get my hopes up. John was a trooper & let me ride all the kiddie rides as I pleased. He even bought me Minnie Mouse Ears! We got vegan ice cream on Main Street & stayed until the fireworks were over, but no proposal came. I wasn’t bummed – it just wasn’t our time yet. I should have known that a Disney proposal wasn’t his style & we weren’t where we “needed” to be financially, so I assumed it would be a while.
The next day (August 22nd) we headed home for a birthday dinner celebration with both of our families at a surprise location. All I knew was the restaurant was located in Ybor & it was somewhere I’d never been but wanted to go. My 1st instinct was the Columbia, but we parked on the opposite side of Ybor to be going there, so I was stumped.
When we started walking (and walking, and walking), it hit me that we WERE going to the Columbia, but it was pouring rain & my dress was white, so I was a bit upset (read: bitching the entire way about why we parked so unbelievably far). About halfway to the restaurant, we saw our family members sitting outside of a small creperia. I thought nothing of the coincidence & just went inside to attempt to dry my dress before making it to the fancy restaurant.
We sat around & chatted with our families then eventually made our way outside to head to the restaurant together. While I was busy trying to coordinate who should ride with who, John had a surprise waiting.
Pictures just can’t do this special day justice, so he best way to share the actual proposal is through a video his brother took for us (& no, I STILL had no idea what was going on despite the filming):
I just love him so much & couldn’t have asked for a better proposal or birthday weekend. He’s just full of surprises!
PS: These photos are from our very 1st photoshoot with Stacy Paul, a month or so before John proposed. Most of them aren’t posed, just us having fun & I’m pretty sure she’s the 1st one that foresaw our engagement.
