Mr. & Mrs. Charos: How We Met

by Kortney Campbell on April 17, 2012

The handsome man pictured above is my husband, Alexander (or as I like to call him, Salamander). We met on a fall evening in 2005 when we were just 17 year old seniors in high school. He was playing in a band with a few of my friends and they needed help getting equipment to the venue. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time and volunteered my services.

I remember seeing him for the first time… dark hair, scruffy beard, playing bouzouki. As soon as I saw him I whispered to my friend “I am going to marry him”. I figured anyone in high school who could grow a beard had to be awesome. He thought I was in another band that was playing that night, and since this was the first band Alexander was ever in, he was afraid to play in front of me.

I don’t remember too much from the night – He spent most of the time outside of the venue playing the flute, so I thought he was so cool and indie, but he was actually just shy. After I got home I saw that Alexander had added me on myspace – I was super excited and so started our AIM chatting.

For several months we talked online, randomly ran into each other at the mall and hung out with a group of friends every now and then. I was in and out of relationships and every time things got rough, I’d find myself saying, “I should just date Alexander, he’s such a good guy”. Finally, I decided to take my own advice and sent him this on myspace:

(I meant to say “lent”, I think I was fasting from sweets that year or something.)

He agreed and we hung out for the first time alone. We went to Starbucks and talked about our post-graduation plans: mine being cosmetology school & him having none (typical Alexander). Afterwards, we went to a bible study with the rest of his family (which I immediately fell in love with) and I mentioned that I no longer had a date for prom (remember that part). Since I had a lot of guy friends, I didn’t think too much about us hanging out (except that I had a crush on him). Alexander didn’t hang out with very many girls though (definitely not alone), so he thought we had gone on a date of some sort.

We started to hangout out more and talked on AIM for hours every night. I definitely had a huge crush on him and I thought he might feel the same way. So at this point, I did what most 17 year old girls do – I decided to reveal my feelings via AIM chat. After telling Alexander that I “thought I really liked him” he answered “That’s sweet” – heart officially broken and face turning red. He then went on to tell me about a dream about us going to prom together. When I mentioned that I still didin’t  have a date, Alexander responded “Want to make my dreams come true?”. Heart officially mended, face even redder.

There we are at prom, actually at Steak-n-Shake (we only stayed at prom for about a half an hour then left because it was pretty lame). A week or so after that we officially started dating by me asking “Are you my boyfriend or not?” – I was pretty classy and definitely subtle. Here’s a sweet little comment he left me (via myspace) shortly after we started dating.

(I’m not exactly sure when I saved these screen shots, but definitely way before we got married)

Since we dated for quite a while I’ll give you some pictures instead of a play-by-play of our whole relationship.

Most of these were taken right after we started dating.

There was a short stint in which I sang with Alexander’s band, Alexander and the Grapes . No, I don’t sing very well. I just wanted to be in a band and Alexander loves me that much. We sang lots of love songs that I wish he would let me post, but I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy if I did.

Here are a few more, half of which are MacBook photo booth pictures.

Now that brings us to 2009, The year in which we got engaged. Make sure to check back tomorrow for part 2 of Charos’ wedding week.
