Thank You, Dr. King

Except for a person that dedicates their whole life to that dream, {peacefully} fighting against the odds for what is right. We have a lot of US holidays that I find rather silly, but in my opinion, today is one of the most necessary and honorable days of the year. Today is an inspiration. Today, I am happy just to be alive. Today I celebrate the life of a true hero and activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

martin-luther-king-jr-coretta-scott-kiss While Dr. King wasn’t in a fight for animal rights, I feel his activism in the Civil Rights Movement is something in which we as vegans should take a close look. Veganism as a whole fights against cruelty towards animals. However, we all have a different idea of how we should fight the good fight. Sure, we are all allowed our opinion, but I’ve seen so many vegan vs vegan face offs in regards to what the “right” form of activism is.

MLK-quote We have people like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) that believe physical force is the way to stop the use of animals, protesters like Fur Free LA that dedicate their lives to peacefully stopping the fur trade, those that chastise non-vegans (for things that may not even be aware of), those that educate only when asked and of course there’s PETA that uses media attention to shock people into veganism. All of these forms of activism are working towards the same thing, and each one has proven to be successful. Yet there can be so much hatred among all of us over a disagreement on how you “should” be vegan.

martin-luther-king-jr-quote This is where I look to Dr. King. In his 39 years, he did more than most people do in a lifetime. Dr King went against what was seen as “right” at the time and fought for what was TRULY right. He did so through sharing knowledge – educating the masses, changing minds, showing compassion. He did so through peace. He did so through love. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr changed the world. I believe that if more vegans come together in love an acceptance, we can make the world a better place as well.

specl_mlk_at_home_tout Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! Stay inspired! This song has always given me chills:

About Kortney Campbell

I'm Kortney; a wife, natural mama and vegan in love with life, food and all things vintage! I've been vegan since December 2007, but have loved to cook & create pretty things since before I can remember. I started Vegan Housewives because I don't think you have to give up the joys of food when going vegan! I have a fondness for re-creating non-vegan recipes (especially my grandma's), making a healthier & animal friendly version so be sure to send me your favorite concoctions by clicking our "share a recipe" button - I would LOVE to veg-i-fy them!

We must all live together. Fighting solves nothing. Look around with open eyes to see and ears to hear, and always with an open heart. See that what you feel, all living things feel – not necessarily with an equal level of awareness, but still felt non-the-less. Stand up for those with less awareness, and bring to light their struggle for equality and humane treatment. Every being is deserving of love and respect, simply for existing and living in this world. Stand for something. Don’t form into masses in disagreeance with one another, focusing on what is wrong, and on that which we are against. Let us focus our strength, and our collective intelligence on what is right. On what is just. On what we truly stand for in our hearts and minds. Dwell on those things. Truly contemplate them, and come to understand them. It is what we are FOR, and not against, that strengthens us, brings us together, and results in change. Positive change. Right change. Equality. Unity. Peace. Love. This I believe is the message of Dr. King. Thank you Dr. King and God bless you. Only God knows what you would have accomplished by now.

I’ve always loved the photo of Coretta kissing him on the check, his eyes are so dreamy it appears he is in such admiration of his beautiful wife, it makes me smile. To live and die for what you believe in…It leaves me speechless to think not only about this man but many others who dared to flip society on it’s head and give it good shake. Your post was beautiful written.
