by Kortney Campbell on March 22, 2014

Every year, PETA runs their “Sexiest Vegan Next Door” contest. This year, we are so excited that one of our wonderful contributors, Kenna, has been nominated! The winner of the contest will be chosen based off votes alone and will receive a free trip to Hawaii, courtesy of

IMG_5449-Edit We definitely think this wonderful mom of 3, deserves it, but chatted with Kenna to find out more about her and exactly why she should win. Just a warning…you’re going to love her!

Full Name: Kenna Nicole Smoot
Age: 29
Hometown: Coeur d’Alene, ID
Current City: We go back and forth between Los Angeles, CA (my home for the last 8 years) and Coeur d’Alene, ID

So, we know you are our wonderful contributor of all the facts on veganism, but can you tell us a little about your personal life?

I am a mom of 3 handsome boys, I stay at home and when I have free time, I love writing. I am married to a technology geek, he’s my best friend, I would be lost without him. I also love modeling. Unfortunately I am an inch too short to be able to sign with a big agency, but it’s my creative passion and my art. I also love family beach days, going on walks, road trips and adventures.

How long have you been vegan and what’s your “story”?

I have been vegan for 10 years. I had a friend that was vegan and I was very curious about it. I grew up in Idaho and knew a lot of farmers and wondered what was so bad about farming. After I learned about factory farming I was horrified. I never really liked meat anyways, so it wasn’t too difficult, in my mind, to go vegetarian. Yet, I did struggle because I didn’t know what to eat instead (which later inspired me to create my Meat Meets Vegan blog).

One day, I was at a stop light and next to me was a truck with cattle in it. There was this beautiful brown and white cow that just stared at me so intensely, I looked her in the eyes and felt like she was asking to be saved and I could see and feel her fear. I know it sounds weird, but I started crying. I felt so horrible for her. I made a promise from that day forward that I would never consume another animal.

How has veganism changed your life?

It has made me so much healthier and conscious of what I am eating. When you think about where your food comes from it starts you down a rabbit hole.

First you start with wondering who your food came from, but when your food is no longer a “who” you wonder where and what they used. Before going vegan, I would eat junk food and processed food, rarely ever fruits or vegetables and I drank soda, rarely water. Now, I never drink soda, I eat organic foods, fruits and veggies are 80% of my diet and you could give me a list of food ingredients and I can tell you where it derived from, any side effects from chemical processing, if it’s likely to be GMO, if it’s safe, etc. I have been obsessed with nutrition for 10 years now and it still fascinates me.

How do you think veganism can change the world?

I could talk about this for hours! Short version–it would help fight climate change by getting rid of feed lots that pollute the earth more than all the cars on the road, it would help lower cancer rates, obesity and heart disease which are the top 3 killers in the USA, it would free up extra grain for hungry kids by not feeding it to animals and it would save all sentient beings from being tortured and abused.

IMG_5510-Edit-Edit IMG_5358-Edit-2 IMG_5555-Edit What’s your all-time favorite food, favorite vegan meal to make and favorite vegan restaurant?

  1. Tough call between the Not-chos from Real Food Daily or their Faux-stess cupcake…or vodka.
  2. Udon stir fry, I love to play with the flavors and seasonings I put into it, each time it’s like a different meal.
  3. Red Bamboo in NYC

What’s your favorite thing to do for yourself?

An afternoon on Melrose Ave, I get coffee at Starbucks while people watching, go to all the vintage shops and end with lunch at M Cafe De Chaya. Their Big Macro and fruit tart are to die for!

What are some of your favorite vegan brands?

Anything Stella McCartney for clothing/accessories and for food I love Tofurky, Gardein and Daiya

Why would you like to be voted PETA’s 2014 sexiest vegan next door?

Honestly, it’s the trip! I don’t even think I am the sexiest vegan–I’m a mom of 3 and there are some hot ladies on there! But I would love the trip to Hawaii! My husband works non-stop since he owns his own company and we don’t get many breaks ever. I feel like unless it was mandatory we won’t make time for it.

How will you celebrate if you win?

My husband said he’d donate $500 to a charity of my choice if I win. So I decided I’ll let you pick as long as it is not a charity that conflicts with Veganism.

So, comment with which charity you think should get the donation and the one with the most comments will get it if I win!

Who would you take with you on the trip?

My husband and the kids, we need a family trip. They’re only covering plane tickets and hotel for 2 but I will gladly pay the rest so our boys can enjoy Hawaii.

IMG_5322-Edit IMG_5706-Edit IMG_5315-Edit Why should everyone vote for you?

As shallow as our world is, beauty speaks volumes to the masses. Normally I wouldn’t enter into a contest like this, but I would do just about anything to promote veganism. So vote for me, if I win it will be a great title to share with others in conversation to plug a Vegan lifestyle. It raises awareness.

Not to mention that then PETA’s “Sexiest Vegan Next Door” would be a blogger on!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I would love to have a home on the water, a boat and travel around the world while homeschooling my boys.

What are the top 5 most important things in your life?

  1. My family
  2. My friends
  3. Writing
  4. Nature walks
  5. Coffee–I need that for survival

Who took the amazing photos featured here?

My best friend in the whole wide world, Andrea Hartwig from Iluli Photo took them. If you’re in Washington you should get photos done by her, she’s the best!

There you have it: The Wonderful Kenna! Don’t forget to comment with the vegan charity you think should get the $500 donation! Oh, and…
