Wedding Planner Extraordinaire

by Kortney Campbell on March 1, 2012

So, we have this awesome friend, Erica Rexroat. She fairly recently started her very own wedding & event planning business, {One Love} Weddings & we think she’s super neat, so we thought you may like to meet her…

Q: Tell us a little about yourself!  Where can we find you on the weekends, what’s your favorite food & when can we hang out?

A: Ah! When my head isn’t buried under papers and in my computer, I love socializing! We frequent downtown Saint Petersburg on a weekly basis. There are so many wonderful restaurants/establishments where we can sit back and relax with a nice glass of wine.

I also love to thrift! Most of the wedding decor and treasures I have accumulated over the past year or so is from the wonderful little shops in our area. I spend a lot of time rummaging for a good deal. After all, what’s a budget friendly planner without a budget friendly find.

*Side note: Her thrifting skills are pretty awesome- we often drool over some of her props (pictured below)!

Q: When did you become an event planner & what made you decide this was your calling?

A: I graduated with a degree in Interior Design years ago. Thanks to the bad housing market, I found it difficult to find a job in my field, so I took a job working at the A La Carte Pavillion. I realized I could apply my skills to event planning while helping design their events. That opened up a new world for me.

Q: What type of event is your absolute favorite to coordinate & why?

A: Weddings will always be my favorite type of event to dedicate all my time to, but I haven’t restricted myself to just that. I have done quite a few bridal and baby showers as well as smaller events and photo shoots. If the opportunity arises, I am always up for a challenge. I learn such amazing new things with every event that passes.

Q: We hear you & the hubby had quite the fabulous wedding (Erica & her hubby Deon pictured above)!  Can you tell us a little about your special day?  Did you plan it yourself?

A: It was amazing! We were married at Cross Creek Ranch in Dover Florida. We had someone helping us as the venue, but at the day drew nearer, I got much more involved in the planning and decor. That was probably when I first thought that I could plan weddings.

Q: You two are just so stinkin’ adorable! How did you & the hubby meet?

A: We met while I was living in Orlando. Long story short, he is usually shy, but he thought I was really pretty when he saw me and took a chance on giving me his number. He left for tour and we talked almost every day for a month straight. When he returned, we had our first date. He made me dinner. It won me over!

Q: What is a day in the happily-married-life of an event planner & a touring musician like?

A: Action Packed!! My husband is normally gone about nine months out of the year (not consecutive). When he is away, I bury my head in work and tend to forget about house projects, social life, etc. Having him home is such a blessing because we get to play catch up cooking wonderful meals, turning our house into a home, spending time with our amazing pups Keily and Smalls, and fun outings with great friends.

Q: Have you had a favorite event so far?

A: It’s hard to choose because they are all so different. I have a wedding coming up in March at the Hemingway house in Key West. I’m sure that will be very memorable for me and the couple!

Q: Have you had any bad event experiences?  If so, what are some of the “what not to-do’s”?

A: I have to remind brides all the time to just take a breath and relax. We will get everything done and your wedding will be beautiful. One thing I have learned that can make the entire planning process a breeze is to make sure a budget is set. A stressful financial state can make or break a relationship with the couple during an engagement. I always help set a budget when we first contract so it’s smooth for the duration of my planning process.

Q: You are currently based out of St. Pete, but do you coordinate events outside your area?

A: Actually, all of my weddings have been outside of St Pete so far. I enjoy traveling for events. As I said before, I’m going down to Key West in March – That will be the farthest I have traveled yet for a wedding. I have my first local St Petersburg wedding coming up in May which I look forward to because I am working with wonderful local vendors.

Q: Have you ever coordinated a vegan or vegetarian wedding?  Any tips for those currently planning one?

A: I had a vegetarian wedding back in October 2011 for a very dear friend of mine. She and her now husband are both vegetarian and requested that we try to stick mainly to that. We did a very traditional southern menu with all delicious vegetarian sides and desserts. The main dish actually ended up being  non-vegetarian because the majority of their guests were not vegetarian, but I feel that it is totally up to the bride and groom. My advice to any bride and groom is to always be considerate of your guests when planning a menu for your reception.

Kortney:I know your wedding was totally vegan and it was so yummy!!! What I always tell clients is that it is always going to be what makes you ultimately happy in the end but to consider your family/guests as well.

Q: What is one thing we wouldn’t know about you without asking?

A: I love love love to cook! My mother was a chef, so as a child growing up, I was exposed to every genre of food you could imagine. That has given me inspiration to experiment with just about anything and everything. Indian food is actually one of my favorites!

Q: How can we get ahold of you?

A: I try not to display all past weddings/etc on my site because I enjoy clients reaching out to me for information and input on their upcoming  events. Please feel free to contact me anytime!
Isn’t she so neat?!  Her vintage wedding decor is our absolute favorite. Hopefully we can team up with her for some events in the future! Thanks so much for letting us have a little inside peek at your life, Erica!  You’re the best!
